NORML Womens Alliance Appreciates a New Approach to Advertising

Hi Everyone,

I thought I’d share something with you that made me smile. In the upcoming issue of High Times, you’ll find an advertisement from Grow-Op Technology Ltd. with this tagline “While most companies use fancy graphics and scantily clad women to push their products… recent studies show that 9 out of 10 hydroponic buyers prefer cute puppies.” (their bolds) And pictured is an adorable Golden Retriever puppy. The ad is attached if you’d like to see it.

I’m glad that advertisers are using humor (and dogs) to push product, it shows more creativity. And I’m glad that a business has chosen to comment on the sexism in the marijuana industry—hopefully this ad will get a lot of notice and further more discussions about this issue. I have a background in design and advertising, and when I see companies using sex to sell marijuana, it strikes me as lazy. There’s much better ways to market products in this industry, and I am glad we are seeing an example of it now.

If you are unhappy with the portrayal of women in advertisements or the costumes at tradeshows, please reach out to the companies who commissioned the ads or hired the models and let them know. Many businesses are responsive to customer complaints. Likewise, if you enjoyed the Grow-Op Tech “puppy” ad, reach out and let them know—I’d be happy to see more puppies in the pages of HT!
